TRAIL PhD Student Reference Guide and Agreement

TheTRAIL PhD Student Reference Guide & Agreement provides a reference guide for all TRAIL PhD students in terms of parties involved in a PhD research project, the general outline of the PhD research process, and the TRAIL education program. In addition, an overview of the mutual rights and responsibilities of the PhD student and TRAIL Research School are presented.

Contents in short:

  • Introduction
  • Chapter 2 presents an overview of all actors involved in a PhD research project. In doctoral education, a PhD student is his/her own ‘manager’, and is therefore responsible for all necessary actions to be taken. However, there are a lot of people available to help and guide the PhD student.
  • Chapter 3 gives more insight into the PhD research process. There are three parts to be considered: getting started in the first year, doing research in the second and third year, and, finally, writing a thesis in the fourth year.
  • Chapter 4 informs you about the TRAIL T&E programme. The full programme can be found on this website.
  • Chapter 5 presents a summary of the rules and regulations about becoming a TRAIL PhD Student.
  • Finally, the appendices give some basic resources for doing PhD research within TRAIL, a list of journals of interest, and the TRAIL application and planning forms.

Since five universities are co-operating in TRAIL, it is unfortunately not possible to incorporate all PhD rules and regulations in detail in this reference guide. We therefore have included links to the PhD sites of each university. And please feel free to contact the TRAIL office at any time!
